About the MA Healthy Soils Guide

The Healthy Soils Guide was created to present a clear path for implementing soil health best practices in the development and construction industries.

It provides professionals with the tools and information needed to update conventional practices that degrade soils with proven techniques that protect and enhance soil health before, during, and after construction.

The Guide is part of a series of state-wide Healthy Soils Initiatives that seek to further investigate and implement the recommendations and action steps identified in the 2023 Massachusetts Healthy Soils Action Plan (HSAP).  It is the result of a multi-firm collaboration led by Regenerative Design Group, Linnean Solutions, BSC Group, and Sasaki, with industry support from A.D. Makepeace, Read Custom Soils, and others. Funding was made possible through a $99,900 Healthy Soils Challenge Grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

During the preliminary draft phase, we shared our recommendations at 15 events in Massachusetts, reaching and receiving input from over 850 professionals in the design and construction fields.

Empowering a broad coalition to improve the future

Planners, regulators, architects, developers, engineers, ecologists, environmental monitors, landscape architects, landscape designers, and contractors all have a role to play in maintaining and improving soil health.

This website serves as a living web-based resource for professionals to access the Guide and find additional information, published research, events, apps, tools, and institutions for further reading.
